What Dosage of Benzoyl Peroxide to Use For Face Acne?

Benzoyl_Peroxide_.jpg Dear Skin Care Expert,

I have been looking at a lot of products available for acne, and many of them contain benzoyl peroxide in them, but in a variety of different dosages. Which dosage of benzoyl peroxide is going to be most effective for more skin while offering fewer  side effects?
-  Dosage Dilemma

Dear Dosage,

It is true that there are a variety of different dosages that are offered in different products. While many dermatologists used to believe that a 10% concentration of benzoyl peroxide was the best option for those dealing with acne, now they are finding that for first time uses, a 2.5% concentration of benzoyl peroxide may be better. Many studies are now showing that the 2.5% benzoyl peroxide is actually proving to be just as effective as the 10% benzoyl peroxide; however, since it is a smaller dose, there are fewer side effects to deal with. If you start out with the 2.5% dose, even though it is smaller, you should make sure to start out with just a small amount in one area of your skin to see how it reacts on your skin. Later after you have become more accustomed to the product you may need a higher dosage, but if you are just starting out, the 2.5% concentration is probably going to be best for you.
